Ivy Heymann Ivy grew up in the South, but moved to New Mexico in the mid 1970’s. Over the years, she built her studio and home, a little at a time. She now represents the very best of the studio artist, selling her work from her home, just east of White Oaks, New Mexico. A day rarely goes by when a visitor, potential customer, neighbor or friend does not stop by to take a look at Ivy’s newest work, to catch up on the local goings-on, discuss politics or the weather or opine on the possible effects of placing dead lizards on tile in the kiln and the ethical considerations thereof. What is often overlooked in these casual conversations is just how demanding working in porcelain is, and how a “maybe” often turns into reality. Ivy’s dedication to her work is not simply a hobby: it is a way of life, and if anything typifies her work, it is her constant striving for perfection. Look into one of her mugs, and you will see something as close as a perfect circle as you will ever hold in your hands and so thin and light weight, it is difficult to understand that this mug was once just a clump of clay. Throwing the clay, developing and mixing the minerals and pigments that make up a given glaze and firing that clay to 2400ş is far from a predictable process. Ivy, over years of practice, is able to produce the finest porcelain pieces anywhere. Profiled in Ceramics Monthly and represented in galleries, her work is both functional and respected as genuine works of art. Ivy's website may be found at www.whiteoakspottery.com.
